Chanting Torah — Torah Cantillation

Ever wondered how to sing from the Torah? Have you thought about chanting Torah on Shabbat or the High Holy Days or maybe even for your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony? In this class, we will learn how to chant from the Torah by studying the little cantillation markings surrounding the words of the Torah called ta’amim, or trope. As we learn the music of the trope, we will apply its method to the verses of the text. Learn how these ancient melodies give color to the words on the scroll; learn how the trope not only makes the text sound beautiful, but enhances its meaning and tells a story.

This class will be taught in two parts:
September through January—Torah Cantillation System for Shabbat
February through May—Torah Cantillation System for the High Holy Days

Required: A beginner’s knowledge of reading Hebrew. OPEN TO ADULTS (and soon-t-obe
adults), AGES 12 AND OLDER.
